Asia-Africa Development Research Institute (AADRI) of Development Research Center(DRC)of the State Council of China was established on January 18 of 1994 in Beijing. Over the past 20 years, under the leadership of Development Research Center of the State Council, AADRI has made continuous efforts to forge ahead, achieved fruitful research findings and played a positive role in promoting exchanges and cooperation with Asian and African countries.
In retrospect, we are proud of the brilliant achievements by our hard work. With a vision to become a first-class think-tank, AADRI, keeping to the guidance and planning of the Central Committee of CPC and the State Council, has followed the changes and development of the international situation with keen observation and conducted effective research into them.
Firstly, we have focused on topic research and analysis, and provided the Party Central Committee and relevant departments with a series of valuable research findings. In regard to the relations among Asian and African nations, their internal and external policies and development strategies, hot regional issues and emergencies, significant and relevant international strategic development, all of which may affect China’s external environment, AADRI has followed the situation closely, selected topics meticulously and conducted in-depth research, resulting in more than a hundred effective special reports for Party Central Committee, some of which have won the praises of the central leadership.
Secondly, we have earnestly promoted academic exchanges both at home and abroad, and learnt from experiences of other research institutions. “Interaction may create waves from calm waters and knocking can bring about sparks from rocks.” AADRI has established extensive ties with research institutions of Asian and African countries and international organizations, as well as relevant institutions at home. We have frequently organized and participated in workshops, seminars and symposiums related to Asian and African issues, at which we not only explained China’s relevant policies, but also broadened our horizon by learning the points of view from the other side, which helped elevate the level of our research.
Thirdly, we are actively engaged in policy consultation of various kinds and gave our candid opinions responsibly. With the deepening of China’s cooperation in politics, economy, social life, science and technology, and culture with Asian and African countries, functional departments of our government are more than willing to hear the opinion from the research institutions so as to do their job better. In supporting their efforts, AADRI has acted as a think-tank of great value by meticulously selecting topics for workshops or symposiums, conducting detailed research and analysis, and providing targeted and operable policy recommendations.
Fourthly, we publish the journal ASIA AND AFRICA REVIEW to help readers from variouscircles to get acquainted with relevant international issues. This journal, turned public in January of 2004, is a periodical of national prestige focusing on policy, strategy and academia. Over the past ten years’ improvement and polishing, ASIA AND AFRICA REVIEW has gradually assumed its unique style, characterized by wide range coverage, unique perspective, sound argument and forward-looking, and carried quite a number of thought-provoking articles with new ideas, which have been well received by readers. In 2012, ASIA AND AFRICA REVIEW was selected as an important source for reprinted articles by Selected Duplication Press of the People’s University of China and the core academic journal by RCCSE.
Lastly, we have fostered both internal and external research forces of high quality and improved our research by bringing up talented people. On the one hand, we have created an enterprise culture that encourages learning and innovation to foster a small but highly trained research force within the institute; on the other hand, we have taken in elite from various social circles as guest research fellows and constructed a reliable social network. Capitalizing on both internal and external forces, we have worked diligently to provide consultation for the state and have made significant achievements in this regard.
We are very grateful for all the favors received. AADRI could not have made such significant achievements in its development over the past 20 years without the right guidance and solicitude of the Development Research Center of the State Council, the support given by associate institutions, the efforts and participation made by experts of international relations, and the pioneering hard work done by our predecessors. We owe big thanks to everyone who had ever helped us. The everlasting gratitude is a driving force that pushes us forward.
Looking ahead, we know very well that only continued efforts on the basis of heritage and innovation can bring about new achievements. Having “China Dream” in mind and with more sense of responsibility, mission and urgency, AADRI will keep up with the times and be innovation-oriented, while sticking to the past work pattern and methods. Only by doing so, can we improve our research ability so as to play a better role as a think-tank, provide sounder consultation for the central government and make bigger contribution to the promotion of China’s relations with Asian and African countries in the new era.
